McCarthy Statement on YouCut Project

Statement

Date: May 14, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (CA-22) today issued the following statement after the House Republican Economic Recovery Working Group launched YouCut, a first-of-its kind initiative designed to change the culture of spending in Washington to a culture of savings.

"America faces a defining moment as we have reached a tipping point. Washington cannot continue its spending problem and rack up more and more debt. Something must be done, and today I am proud to join with my colleagues in a new effort to engage the American people to help us stop this Washington culture of spending.

"YouCut is a project to do just that. Starting today, people from across America can vote--both online and on their cell phone--on spending cuts they would like to see the House of Representatives enact. House Republicans will then offer an up-or-down vote on bringing up the spending cut that receives the most public support. This way the American people will have direct input on what they feel is the best way for the government to save money every week. It is time for the people to have a voice in their government again.

"Every day, hard-working American families have been forced to make tough financial decisions. Why should the federal government act any differently?"
