Senator Roland W. Burris Statement on Supreme Court Nominee Elena Kagan

Today, United States Senator Roland W. Burris issued the following statement on the nomination of Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court:

"Today, I congratulate Solicitor General Elena Kagan on her nomination to the United States Supreme Court," said Senator Burris. "President Obama has made a fine choice in choosing a candidate with a background rich in diverse experiences and a track record for success.

"Ms. Kagan has made great strides in the legal profession - shattering the glass ceiling to be appointed the first woman to serve as Solicitor General of the United States, and also previously when she became the first woman to serve as Dean of Harvard Law School.

"Ms. Kagan's nomination is founded on the experience, integrity, and the dedication to justice she has exhibited throughout her career. That is why I will work closely with my Senate colleagues to ensure her swift confirmation before the August recess.

"I am confident Ms. Kagan will provide an impartial interpretation of the Constitution while understanding the impact her decisions make on the lives of ordinary Americans. As we continue to face one of the most challenging and transformative periods in our country's history, it is with great pleasure that I welcome the nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan to the United States Supreme Court."
