Constitution Day in Norway

Statement

Date: May 13, 2010
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Environment

On behalf of President Obama and the American people, I congratulate the people of Norway on the occasion of your Constitution Day. As Norwegian children parade past the Royal Palace in Oslo and Norwegians across the country honor your rich culture and history, the United States reaffirms our friendship that has endured for nearly 200 years.

The cooperation between our countries is rooted in our common values and aspirations. More than 4.5 million Americans trace their ancestry to Norway -- including such accomplished Americans as Marilyn Monroe and Earl Warren -- and they have contributed to the promise and prosperity of the United States since our earliest days.

Your commitment to peace, stability and human rights make Norway a valued ally and trusted friend as we continue to meet the challenges and seize the opportunities of the 21st century together. From curbing the spread of nuclear weapons and combating climate change to advancing human rights and promoting cooperation in the Arctic, our countries work together as partners.

I wish all Norwegians a peaceful and prosperous Constitution Day and look forward to continuing our strong partnership in the future.
