Chuck Grassley today asked U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis to immediately consider Iowa's application for a National Emergency Grant for workers dislocated from the John Morrell pork slaughter and processing facility in Sioux City.
This closure has resulted in the loss of nearly 1,500 jobs. Grassley indicated that the size and scope of this layoff, during a slow economic period, will have a major impact on the economy of Sioux City and the neighboring areas.
"Losing a major employer like this is tough on a community and its workforce, but it's encouraging that a number of workers have expressed a desire to utilize the services of a national emergency grant to help them find employment and improve their skills," Grassley said.
Grassley previously wrote to Solis to notify her of the plant closure and asked for all due consideration of any requests from the community and state to help these workers get through the loss of a major employer.
