Senator Carper Reacts to President Obama's Supreme Court Nominee Announcement

Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement reacting to President Obama's announcement today of Solicitor General Elena Kagan to replace Justice John Paul Stevens on the Supreme Court:

"I commend President Obama for nominating Solicitor General Elena Kagan to replace the respected Justice Stevens on the Supreme Court of the United States.

"Elena Kagan is highly regarded for her brilliant legal mind and her work to bridge differences and build consensus. I also think her diverse legal experience will bring a valuable perspective and a breath of fresh air to the Supreme Court.

"I urge thorough hearings before the Senate Judiciary committee and hope that my colleagues will treat Elena Kagan fairly and respectfully. I look forward to a timely consideration of her nomination by the full Senate later this year."
