U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan (D-NC) today congratulated Shelby, N.C., for its selection by the American Legion National Executive Committee as the permanent host of the American Legion World Series. Shelby last hosted the World Series in 2008.

"I am thrilled that the American Legion chose Shelby as the new permanent home for the World Series," said Hagan, who was born in Shelby. "Hosting the American Legion World Series is a Grand Slam for Shelby. It will give the community a national profile, boost tourism in the city, spur the local and regional economies, and bring one of the top youth sporting events in the country to our local ballpark. I'm excited for families to take their kids out to the ballgame in Shelby. "

American Legion baseball is one of the most successful and historic amateur athletic leagues in the country. Since it's inception, about 10 million players have competed in the league, and today the program has more than 5,400 teams and 100,000 participants, ages 15 to 19.
