Johanns Applauds Ruling Reinstating Ban On ACORN Funding

Sen. Mike Johanns commented on today's ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals Second Circuit, which affirmed the constitutionality of the Congressional funding ban on the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN). The ban was led by Johanns last year, but ruled unconstitutional by U.S. District Judge Nina Gershon.

"The Court of Appeals made exactly the right decision to overturn the lower court and reinstate the ban on funding to the dubious organization known as ACORN. A broad bipartisan group of my colleagues voted with me several times last year to stop wasting taxpayer dollars on these questionable activities. The circuit court appropriately agreed that access to federal funding is a privilege and not a Constitutional right, and repudiated the lower court's judicial activism.

"Now, the Administration must take swift action to ensure organizations affiliated with ACORN are cut-off from taxpayer dollars, recognizing that many of them have reportedly changed their names but maintained ties."
