We have an obligation to fund schools in Illinois fairly and equitably. A quality education is not a privilege for the few who can afford it. For years the legislature has debated over education funding reform. I am so proud, that in term the Senate passed legislation to reform the way education is funded in Illinois, changing the current inequitable funding system that has plagued Illinois for years while providing the largest amount of property tax relief to Illinois homeowners. The fight to invest in our children is a fight we can't afford to lose.
In the area of higher education, I have taken a particular interest in community colleges funding. This year I sponsored legislation to commission a task force that will study the inequities in community college funding. Community colleges serve nearly 64 % of students and only receive 14% of the available state funding. Community colleges are our best defense against the rising inability of middle class families to afford college education.
