Congressman Cohen Votes To Extend Unemployment Insurance And Health Care Benefits

Press Release

Date: April 16, 2010

Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today voted to support emergency legislation that would extend unemployment insurance and COBRA health insurance benefits for hundreds of thousands of out of work 9th Congressional District residents.

"People who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own can not be abandoned," said Congressman Cohen. "It makes sense to extend unemployment insurance and health care benefits to the millions of Americans struggling to put food on the table and keep the lights on in their house. These extensions will bring some much needed peace of mind and financial relief to working families, seniors, and small business owners, stop senseless Medicare cuts and help create jobs."

Unemployment insurance benefits and COBRA health care benefits expired on April 5. The bill the Congressman supported this evening extends the life of these vital programs to June 2.

The legislation also extends the National Flood Insurance Program, prevents a cut in Medicare physician payments, and extends temporary improvements to the Small Business Administration's loan guarantee program.

The bill passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 289 to 112.
