Maloney Responds To GAO Report On Management Of Oil And Gas Leases On Federal Land

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), senior member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, greeted with concern today's release of a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report on oil and gas leases on federal lands.

"Today's GAO report shows that the Department of the Interior's management of the production from oil and natural gas leases on federal lands has been inconsistent and inadequate in past administrations. With over $6.5 billion in annual revenues, there's too much at stake," Maloney said. "The oil and gas industries have a long history of shortchanging taxpayers, and we must give the Interior Department the tools to step up their management and oversight of this program. That's why I've sponsored H.R. 1462, which calls for the National Academy of Engineering to examine the policies and procedures for ensuring the oil and gas from federal lands is accurately measured."

Rep. Maloney was one of the lawmakers requesting the report from the GAO during the previous administration.
