Issue Position: Economy

Issue Position

When it comes to the economy, as your Congressman, the best I can do is "get the federal government out of the way."

The actions of Congress should not be a hurdle to a healthy and growing economy. With passage of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP, $700b), and passage of H.R. 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 ($787b), Congress has allowed the federal government to spend nearly $2 trillion "to save the economy." Since then, the banking sector continues to struggle, the unemployment rate increased beyond the promised 8 percent, and net job creation is still absent. Congress' borrow and spend mentality was a serious miscalculation and will continue to hurt our recovery unless we take action now.

As your Congressman…

* I will work to reduce small business and corporate taxes to spur economic growth.
* I will fight to stop new rules and regulations that will have negative economic costs or disrupt private sector job growth.
* I will work to make your federal government smaller and more efficient.
* I will reform our unemployment insurance program to balance the need to support workers who lose their job for an extended period without providing a disincentive to seek new employment
* I will work to make sure prudent regulations are in place to constrain the human tendency towards excess and ethical failing.

The US economy is on the tail end of a severe shock. We will come through it. When we do, we will need strong leadership in Washington to have the courage to withdraw the massive stimulus and significant intrusions into corporate America.
