Health Care Reform and Florida's 19th District

Statement

Dear Friends,

Last night, Congress made history by passing health care reform legislation that expands access to affordable coverage to 32 million more Americans. When President Obama signs this historic reform bill into law, the residents of Florida's 19th district will immediately begin to reap its benefits.

Over 160,000 Medicare beneficiaries live in Florida's 19th district, and each year, over 20,000 of them fall into the disastrous Medicare donut hole. Health care reform will provide them with immediate assistance and, eventually, completely phase out this unconscionable gap in prescription drug coverage. Through this legislation, all seniors enrolled in Medicare will see new improvements to their benefits, including the elimination of out of pocket costs for preventative care and routine screenings. This health reform legislation also enhances nursing home care and makes long-term, at-home care more affordable.

This legislation also delivers widely-supported and critically necessary improvements to our health care system: Once this bill becomes law, insurance companies can no longer discriminate against those with pre-existing conditions. Small businesses that provide health insurance to their employees will now be eligible for tax credits to help pay for premiums. Young adults across America will now be able to keep their parents' coverage until the age of 26.

This bill may not be perfect, but it will be my goal to make it even better in the years to come. As we bring to a close this long-running debate on health care, it is now time for Congress to focus aggressively on creating new jobs.

I am running for Congress to bring financial security to the residents of South Florida, and passage of this legislation represents a step forward in meeting this goal. However, our work is far from complete, and if given the opportunity to serve in Congress, I will work hard everyday to deliver results to the working families, small businesses, and seniors who are struggling in this economy.

Warmest regards,

Ted Deutch
