Rep. Clarke's Statement On The Passage Of Health Care Reform

Date: March 22, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Today, the House of Representatives voted to reform our nation's broken health insurance system. This legislation puts Americans back in control of their health care choices, holds insurance companies accountable, and makes coverage more affordable.

"Today, I was proud to cast my vote to expand health insurance coverage for 32 million Americans. This bill gives Americans more choices and brings down health care costs for everyone," said Rep. Clarke. "Its enactment means that small businesses, seniors, young people, and Americans who have been discriminated against by insurance companies will see immediate relief."

Here are just some of the benefits New Yorkers in the 11th Congressional District will see from this reform:

* improves coverage for 367,000 residents with health insurance;
* gives tax credits and other assistance to up to 160,000 families and 11,400 small businesses to help them afford coverage;
* improves Medicare for 68,000 beneficiaries, including closing the donut hole;
* extends coverage to 53,500 uninsured residents;
* guarantees that 11,900 residents with pre-existing conditions can obtain coverage;
* protects 500 families from bankruptcy due to unaffordable health care costs; and
* allows 61,000 young adults to obtain coverage on their parents' insurance plans.

This legislative package includes provisions from the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act. These provisions represent an unprecedented investment of tens of billions of dollars in Pell Grants. This investment will increase the maximum Pell Grant award from $5,550 to a maximum of $6,900 by 2019. Each year, about 8 million U.S. students rely on Pell Grants to help pay for college.
"To America's young people, know that Congress has not forgotten you. The youth are the future leaders of this nation. Our country's success depends on their ability to access quality education," stated Rep. Clarke.

"This is indeed a historic day. For years this nation has been waiting on true reform to come to this country. Today we tackled healthcare and Student Loan reform. Today we can all celebrate this great success, together."
