Letter

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Paul Hodes and Rep. Carol Shea-Porter announced their support for Governor John Lynch's request for federal disaster assistance in the wake of severe storms in late February and early March. Hodes and Shea-Porter supported the declaration in a letter to President Obama, and asked the President to ensure that resources reach the ground in New Hampshire as quickly as possible.

"I strongly support Governor Lynch's request for federal disaster assistance," said Hodes. "These storms left hundreds of thousands of Granite Staters without power and wreaked havoc on our small businesses and families. The people of New Hampshire deserve this assistance. I want to again thank Governor Lynch for his leadership in the aftermath of these storms. I will continue working with federal and state officials to make sure New Hampshire gets the support it deserves."

"New Hampshire is in need of this assistance as quickly as possible," said Congresswoman Shea-Porter. "I support Governor Lynch's efforts and urge President Obama to act now." The full text of the letter is below:

Dear President Obama,

Severe winter storms tore through New Hampshire between February 23 and March 3, 2010, destroying businesses and leaving over 300,000 residents without power. The hurricane force winds, rain and snow caused trees to topple, fires to spread, and paralyzed much of the state for days. Today, Governor John Lynch submitted a request for federal disaster assistance in Grafton, Hillsborough, Merrimack, Rockingham, Stafford, and Sullivan counties. We fully support Governor Lynch's request and urge you to provide federal assistance to these hard hit areas as quickly as possible.

We strongly urge you to move quickly in delivering assistance to New Hampshire. We have seen first hand the hard work that first responders and other emergency personnel have been doing over the last several weeks. As they help our families and small businesses get back on their feet, we urge you to provide our communities with the resources we need to fully recover from the storms. In the event that federal and state cost sharing may apply, we would also ask you to consider lifting the state and local match requirements, so that our communities can begin recovering as quickly as possible.

Thank you for your consideration of this request.
