First District Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter (D-Rochester) said last night's vote on health care reform ranked "right at the top" of her career in Congress saying the bill will help the country's middle class.

"This is just achievement that Congress brought to America and it is right at the top. We were ecstatic on the floor, absolutely ecstatic. I am sure you heard people chanting "yes we can, yes we did'," said Shea-Porter to local reporters.

Shea-Porter, a long time support of health reform bills, said she understood from her experiences prior to Congress than some type of health care reform was needed. Shea-Porter was one of the final speakers the Democrats had for the bill last night.

Asked about the politics going going forward Shea-Porter was proud of her actions.

"I do think that when the dust settles and people realize "hey I can keep my insurance and if I go off I don't have to worry about a pre-existing condition. If I want to start a business I don't have to worry about losing my health insurance. This is really ultimately a good deal for the American people," said Shea-Porter. "I didn't come here to warm a a seat. I came here to try to work for change."
