Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (D-MD) today voted for two bills that will create thousands of new jobs. The Disaster Relief and Summer Jobs Act of 2010, H.R. 4899, passed the House by a vote of 239-175. This legislation will invest $5.1 billion to help devastated communities rebuild their homes, infrastructure, and local economies. The bill also helps reduce youth unemployment by expanding summer youth job opportunities by 300,000 summer jobs.

"These bills will help state and local governments create jobs by making necessary investments in schools, hospitals, sewers, transportation projects, and summer jobs in our communities," said Congresswoman Edwards. "The bills passed today are important steps in the right direction that will help increase economic growth and rebuild the nation's depleting infrastructure for the 21st Century."

The Small Business and Infrastructure Jobs Tax Act of 2010 will also:

* Increase the tax deduction for start-up expenditures to encourage the formation of new small businesses;
* Help create jobs by extending the TANF Emergency Fund that is already on track to put over 160,000 Americans back to work;
* Save American jobs by cracking down on foreign tax haven corporations that are taking advantage of the U.S. tax treaty network. By dodging U.S. taxes, these companies gain an advantage over American companies that play by the rules.

The Disaster Relief and Summer Jobs Act of 2010 will also:

* Provide $600 million to local Workforce Investment Boards (WIBs) to expand successful summer jobs programs that were funded in the Recovery Act.
* Provide $60 million to extend the Recovery Act small business lending program for another month.
