Congressman Shadegg Applauds Republicans' Decision To Ban Earmarks

Today, Congressman John Shadegg (AZ-03) issued the following statement commending his fellow Republicans for following his lead and refusing to accept earmarks:

"Like my friend and colleague Dr. Tom Coburn (R-OK), I believe that "earmarks are a gateway drug on the road to a spending addiction.'

"We don't have a minute to waste in proving to the American people that Congress is serious about stopping Washington self-dealing. Congress' spending addiction will undoubtedly saddle our children and grandchildren with unbelievable sums of debt.

"Shockingly, the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct gave a virtual pass to a number of Members in question for the tens of millions of dollars they secured for the tainted PMA lobbying group. This is a slap in the face to every American and it sends a signal that Washington and Congress are operating without a conscience.

"Our forefathers didn't envision a legislative branch filled with corruption and ethical improprieties. Today, Republicans took the first steps towards regaining creditability and the respect of the American people by enacting a moratorium on earmarks. The process needs to be reformed as does all of federal spending."
