Today Congressman David Wu issued the following statement after the U.S. House Appropriations Committee announced that it will not permit federal appropriations for for-profit companies:

"I have always considered it part of my role as congressman to work within our system and secure appropriate federal funds, which would otherwise have been allocated elsewhere, for urgent needs in my district. I applaud the ban on appropriations for for-profit companies and the related effort to ensure that companies seeking to work with the Defense Department receive funding based on a competitive, merit-based process.

"It is vital that our government spend funds in an upfront, fiscally responsible manner. These new rules provide a level playing field and will help reduce inappropriate use of the appropriations process to benefit large corporations."
