Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) today released the following statement regarding legislation mandating American military forces be withdrawn from Afghanistan by the end of the year. The resolution, sponsored by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), failed by a vote of 356 -- 65. Smith voted against the resolution.
"It is dangerous and irresponsible to advise retreat while our troops are engaged on the ground. The counter-insurgency strategy in Afghanistan under General McChrystal's direction already is producing dramatic successes, including the capture of key Taliban leaders. The American people support our troops and their mission, and to withdraw before the job is done would jeopardize their efforts," Smith said.
