Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Energy

President Barack Obama announced today that the federal government will guarantee loans to build two new nuclear reactors at the Plant Vogtle facility in Waynesboro. The reactors - the first built in the United States in almost 30 years - will be completed in 2016 and 2017.

Congressman Barrow released the following statement:

"I'm very pleased that President Obama has made a commitment to expanding the nuclear facilities at Plant Vogtle. Since coming to Congress I've supported the expanded use of nuclear power as part of a comprehensive energy policy. We've got the technology, and nuclear power doesn't emit carbon. But this isn't just about more energy and less pollution - it's also about jobs. Many families in Georgia are struggling, and this will create good-paying jobs for folks in the CSRA. I applaud President Obama for his commitment to expanding the use of nuclear power in the United States."

Congressman Barrow is a member of the bipartisan Nuclear Issues Working Group.
