In the wake of the Bureau of Labor Statistics' release of the national unemployment rate for January, showing a slight decline from 10.0 to 9.7 percent and continuing non-farm job losses of 20,000, Dr. David Gill urged both houses of Congress to cooperate in passing a robust jobs bill quickly. Dr. Gill, an Emergency Room doctor in Bloomington, is an independent-minded Democrat running for Congress in Illinois' 15th District against five-term incumbent Tim Johnson.
Dr. Gill stated, "Even with a slight decline in the unemployment rate, the status quo is simply intolerable. Almost 15 million Americans remain out of work. The vast majority of families in our district have seen their standard of living fall during the ten years they have been represented by Mr. Johnson. Corporate lobbyists and the career politicians they fund--from both political parties--continue to stand in the way of real reform in health care, energy, and the regulation of the big Wall Street banks."
"People all across this district, of all political persuasions, are looking for a different kind of representative. I'm proud that my campaign is funded by ordinary citizens, because that's who I intend to work for when I get to Washington. True reform in health care and energy policies will create millions of jobs; only by standing up to the corporations currently dominating in Washington can we secure the well-being of American families."
