Loebsack Lauds First Lady's Initiative To End Childhood Obesity

Congressman Loebsack issued the following statement on First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" initiative to end childhood obesity. This week, Congressman Loebsack introduced a bill that will help fight childhood obesity. The Healthy Foods for Healthy Schools Act, combined with his Hunger Free Schools Act, which he introduced in November 2009, tie-in to some of the pillars in the "Let's Move" initiative, including improving the quality of food in the school meal programs, and making healthy foods more accessible and affordable.

"I applaud the First Lady for her leadership in addressing the issue of childhood obesity. Far too often, our children are unable to access quality, affordable, and nutritious meals. It is critical that we make sure that school cafeterias have access to healthy foods, and that we work to streamline ways to make it easier for schools to provide meals that are healthful.

"My bills, the Healthy Foods for Healthy Schools Act and the Hunger Free Schools Act, will help provide children with access to meals that are high quality while enhancing the USDA Foods program. During these tough economic times, it is increasingly critical that we work towards making sure that all children have access to foods that are healthful."
