Brown Says The Democrats' Fiscally Reckless Agenda Harms South Carolinians

Press Release

Date: Feb. 4, 2010

Today, the House of Representatives passed legislation to increase the amount the government is allowed to borrow, pushing the Federal debt limit to $1.9 trillion. This not only represents the largest debt limit increase in history, but also marks the third increase since President Obama took office a little over a year ago. This legislation barely passed the House by a vote of 217 to 212, with every Republican and 37 Democrats voting no.

"It is disappointing that a week after the President promised to rein in government spending and decrease our nation's deficit, Democrats have once again voted to increase the debt limit. The increase in our nation's debt coupled with record-high unemployment numbers prove that the Democrats' tax and spend policies do not work, especially in South Carolina where the unemployment rate soared to 12.6% last month," said Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. (R-SC).

This legislation was followed by a vote to allow the Democrats' PAYGO bill, requiring that mandatory spending increases or tax decreases be offset with tax increases in other areas. Not only does this bill promote tax hikes to pay for the Democrats' record spending spree, but it does nothing to curb our nation's growing deficit or help the American people already crippled by our broken economy.

Referring to PAYGO, Congressman Brown said, "People are struggling in South Carolina with unemployment at an all time high, the last thing our families and small businesses need is a bill which paves the way for future tax increases."
