When Will The Record Deficit Spending Stop?

Statement

Date: Feb. 4, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Tom Rooney (R-Fla.) released the following statement after today's vote in the House to increase the national debt limit:

"Today I voted against an irresponsible bill to increase the national debt ceiling to $14.292 trillion. This $1.9 trillion increase is the largest in American history. In one day the Democrats managed to increase our national debt an amount which previously took over 150 years to accumulate. If this legislation is enacted the debt limit will have increased by $5.33 trillion in three short years. On a per capital basis, a debt limit of $14.294 trillion equates to a debt of $46,319 per person.

"Federal spending is out of control. It's time Washington rolls up its sleeves and makes tough decisions on how we can stop increasing the debt and cut spending. Unfortunately today the Democratic leadership did just the opposite. For the third time in the 13 short months I have been on Capitol Hill we are increasing the debt limit. The out of control and reckless spending must stop."
