"When it comes to the need for more fiscal restraint in Washington, the President may talk a good game, but the budget proposal released today proves that he does not take the matter as seriously as he should. Despite all the rhetoric and gimmicks, the President's budget more than doubles the debt, drives spending to $3.8 trillion in FY2011, pushes the deficit to a new record of $1.6 trillion in FY 2010, and will raise taxes by over $2 trillion through 2020.
"While I believe that the President's talk of putting a freeze on discretionary spending is a step in the right direction, it would have been better if the President had done this last year before accruing a $1.35 trillion debt during his first year in office. Talk is cheap and what we really need is a no-excuses approach to getting our fiscal house in order by cutting out even more needless programs in the federal budget than the President has suggested. At the core of the problem is entitlement programs, which this budget does not properly address, and if the government does not figure out how to curb them, then our national debt will continue to soar."
