Congressman Steve Scalise today called for the resignation of U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Porteous after the House Judiciary Committee Impeachment Task Force unanimously voted to move articles of impeachment forward to the full House Judiciary Committee.
"After I read through all four Articles of Impeachment, it is clear that the Task Force's findings warrant Judge Porteous' removal from the federal bench. In order to remove the cloud that exists over the Eastern District, it is time for Judge Porteous to resign immediately. Short of an immediate resignation, I will continue pushing the House Judiciary Committee to act expeditiously so the Eastern District can once again provide the citizens a justice system free from corruption."
The impeachment articles state that Porteous took cash, gifts and other services from lawyers and a bail bondsman who had business in the court over which he presided. The articles also state that he lied during his Senate confirmation process as well as in his personal bankruptcy filing.
If the Judiciary Committee approves the resolution to impeach Judge Porteous, it would be up for a vote in the full U.S. House of Representatives. Only 14 federal judges have been impeached in the history of the United States.
