Statement of U.S. Senator Russ Feingold on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

"Today, I join all Americans in honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. More than 45 years ago, his words inspired a generation of leaders to stand up and speak out against injustice, and work toward an America where people of all colors and backgrounds would enjoy equal opportunities and equal protection under the law. To truly honor his lifelong fight, we must keep moving forward with the same commitment to justice, and the same dedication to a better America, that Dr. King showed us while marching through Selma, Memphis and our nation's capital. With the election of our country's first African-American president, our nation has come a long way since Dr. King's call for freedom rang from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Although much more remains to be done, today we recognize that our nation's boundless capacity to change will continue to bring us closer to realizing Dr. King's dream."
