Bono Mack Calls For Public Health Care Negotiations
Emphasizing that negotiations on health care legislation should not be held in secret behind closed doors, Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) today signed a discharge petition that would force a vote on a bipartisan resolution (H. Res. 847) requiring these negotiations to be public and open to the media. Bono Mack has strongly supported C-SPAN's request to broadcast the proceedings, as was pledged during the 2008 presidential campaign.
"Americans deserve to have a seat at the table as Congress grapples with an issue that affects every single American and over a sixth of our national economy," said Bono Mack. "Such a critical debate shouldn't be locked behind closed doors and negotiated in secret by a few members of the Majority. It should instead be an open and transparent process -- just like Americans were promised during the presidential campaign.
"Over the past few weeks, the Majority in Congress has blocked bipartisan input and excluded the American public. It is time for that to change. An issue as critical as the future of our health care system must not be subject to back room deals and irresponsible compromises.
"I am proud to join my colleagues in supporting this effort to make the health care negotiations public and accountable to the American people."
