Emphasizing that Americans should be able to watch negotiations on health care legislation as they were promised, Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) today issued the following statement based on news reports that such negotiations would be kept behind closed doors and exclude Congressional Republicans:
"Once again, the Majority in Congress is acting without regard to the will of the American people and without bipartisan input," said Bono Mack. "The Majority's health care plan, with its Medicare cuts and tax increases, shouldn't be patched together behind closed doors -- these negotiations should be public and open to the scrutiny of all Americans.
"Health care reform affects every single American and one-sixth of our national economy. Americans shouldn't be shut out of the process and deserve the transparency and accountability that we were all promised.
"I urge Democratic leadership to reverse their decision to block public access to the Conference on their health care legislation and support C-SPAN's request to broadcast such negotiations."
