HULSHOF STATEMENT ON MARRIAGE AMENDMENT
U.S. Congressman Kenny Hulshof (R-MO) today made the following statement regarding a constitutional amendment protecting marriage.
COLUMBIA, MO. - - U.S. Congressman Kenny Hulshof (R-MO) today made the following statement regarding a constitutional amendment protecting marriage:
"Marriage, defined as a legal union between one man and one woman, has served our society well for thousands of years. It is a basic, yet sacred, social institution.
"An overwhelming majority of Americans believe that the traditional definition of marriage should stand. When Congress passed and President Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the idea was to protect states like Missouri from being forced against the will of its citizens to recognize gay marriage.
"Given the actions of the Massachusetts Supreme Court and the City of San Francisco, it is reasonable to assume that DOMA will soon be challenged in the courts.
"The President is right - there is a need for clarity on this issue. Although a constitutional amendment is an extraordinary step, it is warranted in this case. It is the only course of action that will guarantee marriage remains a sacred union of a man and a woman."
