Barrett Calls For Comprehensive Review Of National Security Policy

Statement

Date: Dec. 30, 2009
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman J. Gresham Barrett (SC,03) today released the following statement:

"In the past two months, terrorists have attacked our country twice, first at Ft. Hood, Texas in November and then, just last week in the skies over Detroit. In both incidents there were clear indications of impending trouble, and more importantly it is clear that both attacks could have been prevented had it not been for deep rooted systemic failures within the Obama Administration.

"Today we learned two former Guantanamo Bay detainees were allegedly instrumental in the Christmas Day terror plot on board a Northwest Airlines jet. Despite the dramatic increase in terrorist activity, the President apparently remains committed to moving forward with his dangerous plan to close GITMO, demonstrating an unwillingness to properly adjust his national security strategy to counter the increasing threats to American families.

"We cannot continue to trade our national security for international popularity. As a former Captain in the United States Army, I believe it is time the Department of Homeland Security undergo a top to bottom inspection for overhaul. We must learn from our mistakes, make the proper adjustments and move forward with a new comprehensive national security policy that ensures the safety of every American."
