Stabenow Applauds Opening of GM Battery Pack Production Plant in Brownstown Township

U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) today made the following statement praising General Motors, Inc. for opening a brand new battery pack production plant in Brownstown Township. In partnership with Compact Power, Inc., General Motors will be producing batteries that will be used to power a new fleet of hybrid and electric vehicles, creating new long-term sustainable green collar jobs right here in Michigan.

As a member of the Senate Finance Committee, Stabenow championed the advanced battery provision to encourage the production of battery technologies here at home in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. She has been a long-time advocate for a 21 st Century Manufacturing strategy that will provide long-term energy solutions, create good-paying jobs, and revitalize manufacturing across the country. She authored the Green Collar Jobs Initiative, which laid the foundation for these critical investments.

"Today, General Motors takes the next step in advanced automotive innovation, bringing online its battery pack production plant in Brownstown Township. These battery packs will power the new electric vehicles of the future and create jobs here at home. I am proud to have championed the advanced battery provision in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that ensured these battery packs were made right here in Michigan."
