Today Rep. Eric Massa announced that the United States Department of Agriculture has released $290 million in funds for direct payments to struggling dairy producers. The funds were part of the $350 million recently approved funds in the FY 2010 Agriculture Appropriations Bill (PL 111-80). $60 million of the total funds were designed for purchasing cheese and other dairy products with the remaining $290 million slated for direct payments to keep dairy producers operating. Rep. Massa sent two letters along with other House members to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack urging prompt action to save the dairy industry from financial disaster. "Dairy farmers are part of the agricultural backbone of my district and I will always fight for them," stated Rep. Massa. "The House Appropriations Committee has been very responsive to the concerns of our dairy producers and I thank Sec. Vilsack and the other Members who fought for these much-needed funds to help our nation's dairy industry through this crisis."
