U.S. Senator George LeMieux (R-FL) today called for suspected terrorist Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab to be handled as an enemy combatant as opposed to the target of a domestic criminal case. Abdulmutallab is the Nigerian man apprehended aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 for allegedly attempting to blow up the plane.
Sen. LeMieux said:
"The decision to try Abdulmutallab as anything but a terrorist is a mistake. Affording enemy combatants like Abdulmutallab access to our civilian court system damages our nation's ability to gather critical intelligence information. We should not provide unearned and undeserved rights to terrorists intent on killing civilians. This is yet another indication of the Obama Administration's stubborn insistence to turn the global war on terror into a law enforcement effort."
