Rep. Barton Blasts Democrats Holiday Spending Spree

Statement

Date: Dec. 16, 2009
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Joe Barton (R-Ennis/Arlington) released the following statement after voting against two massive Democratic spending proposals that Speaker Pelosi rushed through Congress on Wednesday:

"With Christmas just around the corner, Congressional Democrats -- led by Speaker Pelosi -- went on a shopping spree Wednesday using borrowed money and ultimately our children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren will be paying the bill.

On their Christmas list was a new $150,000,000,000 jobs bill that will likely create more government waste than actual jobs. But before they could pay for this "second stimulus" or as we call it "son of stimulus," Democrats recklessly rammed through a $290,000,000,000 increase to the country's debt ceiling. Amazingly enough, all those zeroes will only cover the nation's bills for two months and then Democrats will borrow even more of your money.

There is a limit to how much money we can borrow before it has a profound effect on the American way of life. We shouldn't be borrowing more money without first having a plan to pay it back. Businesses and families don't run their budgets that way and neither should the federal government. Republicans have alternatives and we will continue to push our plans that will create jobs and cut spending."
