Today, Congressman J. Gresham Barrett (SC-03) released the following statement in regards to reports that the Administration has selected the Thomson Correctional Center in northwestern Illinois to hold terrorists that are currently in custody at the detainee facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba:
"The security of American families, not the appeasement of the international community, must be the President's first priority. Unfortunately, President Obama's decision to transfer terrorists from the secure and isolated facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to a civilian facility in our country's heartland jeopardizes the safety of all Americans and represents a serious shift in national security policy.
"To be clear, my chief concern is not the potential escape of these enemy combatants, but the simple fact that their presence on our soil increases the risk of a future terrorist attack. Whether they are transferred to Illinois or Colorado or Charleston, we should all be equally concerned for the safety and security of our fellow citizens.
"I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress and leaders at both the state and local levels to prevent this and any other further transfer of terrorists to the United States."
