Today, Congressman J. Gresham Barrett (SC-03) voted against H.R. 4314 Debt Limit Increase and H.R. 2847 Jobs for Main Street Act. After voting, Barrett said the following:
"At a time when our national deficit is over $12 trillion and our national unemployment rate is at a 26 year high, Congress should be focusing on finding ways to pay down our debt and strengthen our economy. Unfortunately, it seems the Democratic majority has other plans. The two pieces of legislation that were passed today will not strengthen our economy or create more jobs in the private sector where they are needed; instead, these bills will create unnecessary financial hardships for our children and grandchildren.
"My home state of South Carolina currently has the fifth highest unemployment rate in the nation, so I certainly understand the importance of job creation. If we truly want to succeed at creating more jobs, we need to start by restoring fiscal discipline in Washington and offering tax relief to families and small businesses. This way, we can create more jobs without financially burdening future generations."
