Rather than rely on quotas, the University of Michigan worked hard to create an admissions program that recognizes that diversity is America's strength, and in their first significant opportunity to show a more inclusive side of the Republican Party the Bush Administration has decided to intervene and try to undermine Michigan's efforts. The Bush Administration continues a disturbing pattern of using the rhetoric of diversity as a substitute for real progress on a civil rights agenda. I believe in an America where we take common sense steps to ensure that our schools and workplaces reflect the full face of America, and that is apparently a very different vision of America than that put forth by the Bush Administration.
