Moran's Statement On The President's Afghanistan Strategy

Statement

Date: Dec. 2, 2009
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Jerry Moran made the following statement in response to President Barack Obama's recently announced strategy for the war in Afghanistan.

"The mission in Afghanistan must succeed," Moran said. "It remains central to our country's security that the Taliban and al-Qaeda terrorists be defeated, that Afghanistan govern itself, and that the region be stabilized to prevent a safe haven for those who want to destroy our way of life. Our troops should be given the support necessary to achieve success. The upcoming months will tell us whether these additional resources are sufficient.

"While the deployment of additional troops is needed, I am opposed to the President's arbitrary timetable for withdrawal. He should focus on a victory strategy, not an exit strategy. The President is sending mixed messages and appears to want it both ways-more troops to satisfy his generals' recommendations and a timetable for withdrawal to satisfy his Democratic supporters in Congress."
