Issue Position: Environment
Protecting Our Environment
Dan Hynes is a strong advocate for environmental preservation and responsibility. As a public servant and parent, Dan understands we are environmental stewards, not only for today but tomorrow. He will make clean air, clean water, renewable energy, the preservation of open spaces, and green jobs among his top priorities as Governor. This is the only way to ensure everyone in Illinois will be able to pass on a safe and livable environment to their children and grandchildren.
As Comptroller, Dan made his office as eco-friendly as possible by enacting a "green" code of operations, which includes mandatory recycling and the use of eco-friendly inks and paper products. He also enacted programs to increase electronic fund transfers, eliminating more than 4 million paper checks and envelopes each year. In order to decrease paper usage even further, Dan implemented an online filing system for financial reports filed by the over 6,000 local governments. This program was so successful, he later oversaw the expansion of paperless transactions and communications in other departments. Dan also ordered an energy audit of the state's check production facility, and based on the results, he adopted energy-efficient lighting and insulation systems.
As Governor, Dan will support stronger clean air and water standards. Dan also supports the Obama Administration's efforts to reduce green house gas (GHG) emissions. If the federal government cannot accomplish this goal, Dan believes Illinois and the Midwest can play a vital role in GHG reduction. For example, Dan believes we must make every effort to increase our reliance on renewable energy sources such as wind and solar energy. The state must be a leader in developing renewable energy and energy-efficient programs, which is why his administration would commit substantial resources to these programs. Dan will also ensure Illinois leads by example by weatherizing state buildings, promoting green jobs throughout Illinois, requiring state buildings and renovations to be LEED certified, and committing to a statewide green fleet.
Dan will also work to invest in technologies that allow us to take advantage of our resources. While Dan is committed to reducing our dependence on non-renewable resources, he also knows that Illinois' coal resources hold more BTUs than the oil reserves of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia combined. Dan believes by investing in clean coal technology, we can create new tech jobs at home, utilize our tremendous natural resources and protect the environment. Dan will offer unqualified financial support for coal plants conditioned on the utilization of clean coal technology, renewable energy production incentives, GHG reporting and offsets of future GHG emissions. Further, Dan will promote policies that seek diversification of energy sources for electricity production including promoting all forms of renewable carbon and non-carbon-based fuels, as well as promoting energy efficiency projects.
As Governor, Dan will continue his fight to protect and preserve our environment and minimize the state's waste stream. He will carry on the foresight he showed as Comptroller by working with and on behalf of the state's environmental agencies and groups to ensure the environment is a top priority in his administration.
