Congressman Jim Matheson released the following statement after listening to the President's speech announcing his decision on the way forward in Afghanistan :
"As the President said tonight, we did not ask for this fight. Terrorists plotted from within Afghanistan and the result was the attacks of 9-11. As long as the goal is the disruption and destruction of Al Qaeda and its leaders, that must be the job for our allies and our troops.
After listening to the generals in the field, our Commander in Chief has made his decision to increase our fighting force. Beyond sending more troops, the President also appropriately laid out a more comprehensive plan. I think the President, our military leadership and our extraordinary men and women in uniform deserve support to finish the job against Al Qaeda and then to come home.
As Congress begins to gather testimony on the plan this week, I look forward to learning more details," said Matheson.
