Bono Mack Statement On President's Speech On Afghanistan

Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) today issued the following statement on the President's speech on his counterinsurgency strategy to defeat the Taliban and al-Qaeda in Afghanistan:

"Our troops are fighting to protect and preserve freedom across the world and deserve our full support -- these brave men and women must have the resources they need to do their jobs and succeed in their mission," said Bono Mack. "Our nation is facing threats from around the world. Al-Qaeda terrorists and the Taliban have made it clear that they will stop at nothing to destroy our freedom and have proven their blatant disregard for the principles of democracy and basic human rights.

"Ensuring stability in Afghanistan will keep these terrorists from using this volatile region as a haven from which to launch their attacks on the Afghan people, Afghanistan's neighbors, the U.S. and our allies. I am encouraged by the President's recognition of this serious threat and remain hopeful that we can help foster stability in Afghanistan and provide opportunities and advancement for the Afghan people.

"Like many of my colleagues, I still have questions about the President's strategy for this very complex situation and hope that he will provide our military leaders with the forces and tools needed to achieve success. I look forward to hearing the testimonies of our military commanders and leading diplomats in the coming weeks that will shed more light on this plan and ensure a blueprint for success is in place."
