Schwartz Statement On President Obama's Afghanistan Strategy

U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz issued the following statement on President Obama's strategy in Afghanistan.

"President Obama has announced a course of action in Afghanistan that focuses on partnering with, and training, the Afghan Security Forces so they can assume responsibility for their country as soon as possible. I support the President's commitment toward eliminating the threats to our national security by bringing stability to a region that has become a safe haven for al Qaeda.

"Even with the President's decision to deploy additional troops, he has articulated a clear exit strategy that is essential to avoiding our participation in an open-ended conflict.

"Over the next two years it is important that Congress and the Obama Administration closely monitor the situation on the ground and ensure that we have a committed and honest partner in the Afghan government.

"I understand the human toll this war has taken on our troops. I have seen our soldiers off at Willow Grove Naval Air Station and I have spoken to family members of those brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for this country. It is imperative that Congress ensure our troops receive the resources they need to achieve their mission and that we do so in a fiscally responsible way."
