Congresswoman Corrine Brown Supports Troop Increase To Vanquish Taliban Forces

Statement

Date: Dec. 1, 2009
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Brown made the following statement:

"General Stanley A. McChrystal, the U.S. Coalition Commander in Afghanistan, has assessed that without an immediate surge of approximately 40,000 additional troops on the ground in Afghanistan, our mission would be doomed to failure, and a return to Taliban rule would likely follow. This position is one also held by General David H. Petraeus, the area's regional commander, as well as Adm. Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. As a fervent supporter of our troops overseas, I am a firm believer that we need to provide them with all of the resources they need to complete their mission and defeat the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, the terrorist organizations responsible for orchestrating the attacks on September 11th.

I strongly support our brave troops and the mission Congress sent them to achieve in Afghanistan. The expedited deployment of additional troops will provide greatly needed support to the soldiers based there, as well as buttress our nation's effort to reverse recent Taliban momentum. In my estimation, without "accelerated deployment," our nation has very little hope of successfully stabilizing the country, destroying Al Qaeda, and degrading the military capability of the terrorist groups bent on de-stabilizing Afghanistan and the entire region. Preventing Al Qaeda from returning to Afghanistan and thwarting the Taliban insurgents from toppling the Karzai government is indispensable to our national security, and will serve as a tremendous step forward in the war on terror."
