Congresswoman Chu Introduces Resolution On H1N1 Virus

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Today Congresswoman Judy Chu (D-CA) and Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA) introduced a resolution supporting the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) H1N1 guidelines by all healthcare providers, prioritizing high-risk groups for pandemic flu resources, faster vaccine distribution and improving the federal government's response to pandemics.

"This resolution is in honor of Monica Rodriguez, who died from complications of the H1N1 flu virus," said Rep. Chu. "Monica, a pregnant mother, had severe flu symptoms and sought care at a local Los Angeles County hospital. After two visits within 24 hours she was sent away with cough syrup. A few days later, after continued severe flu symptoms, Monica went to a different hospital. They immediately admitted her because she was in one of the CDC identified high-risk groups and started treating her appropriately. Unfortunately, it was too late; Monica Rodriguez died on October 25th 2009.

"Many public health departments, hospitals, doctors and nurses are doing a good job of preventing and treating the estimated 22 million cases of H1N1 across the country. However, we must not be complacent and let patients like Monica slip through the cracks. That is why my colleagues and I are joining together to express our support for the CDC guidelines, encourage people to be vaccinated and call on the federal government to distribute the vaccine as quickly as possible."
