Larson Calls House Vote On Health Care Reform "Historic Step"

Congressman John B. Larson (CT-01), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement after the House of Representatives voted to pass the Affordable Health Care for America Act, an historic health care reform bill that will provide quality, affordable health care for the American people.

"This is a great triumph for the American people along the lines of the passage of Social Security and Medicare. Presidents from Teddy Roosevelt to Franklin Roosevelt to Harry Truman and Richard Nixon have tried and failed to turn the giant ship of this nation's health care system around.

"Today, we have taken an historic step towards making this needed reform a reality. For the first time in history this body has taken a vote in favor of providing quality, affordable health care for the American people. We are offering those with insurance the security and stability of knowing their health care can't be taken away because they get too sick or have a pre-existing condition. It tells American families who don't have insurance that they can choose a health plan that fits their needs.

"This is a new day in America -- one when no family faces financial ruin because someone gets sick, and no child goes untreated because their parents can't afford to take them to the doctor. I am honored to have the opportunity to take this vote today and I urge my colleagues in the Senate to take action on this important issue."
