Unveils sign renaming bridge to honor military veterans

Gov. Steve Beshear today joined state and local officials to celebrate the completion of an $11 million project to rebuild a flood-prone section of KY 70 in Casey County.

"This important improvement to KY 70 -- the Liberty to Campbellsville Road -- means better and safer travel for the people of Casey County," Gov. Beshear said. "That's really the principle behind all that we do at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet."

The reconstruction project covered 2.4 miles, beginning at Brush Creek and extending to the western city limits of Liberty. It included construction of a new bridge and an improved grade, which will make KY 70 less susceptible to closure in times of flooding. Before the project, high water often cut traffic to and from the west.

The new roadway also means less congestion in downtown Liberty because trucks no longer have to travel through downtown to get to and from west KY 70.

Gov. Beshear also unveiled a sign designating the new KY 70 bridge as the Veterans Memorial Bridge, in honor of all veterans in Casey County. The very name of the community -- Liberty -- serves as a reminder of American values, the Governor said.

"It is appropriate that, as a small token of our gratitude, we name a bridge in honor of those who have served," Gov. Beshear said. "This is truly a special place, and I am proud to be a part of making it safer while paying tribute to the service members who have fought to keep us safe on a daily basis."
