Congressman Jim Matheson said today he has received notice that the federal Department of Transportation has awarded the Essential Air Service contract for the Cedar City Airport to SkyWest Airlines. SkyWest has been the carrier since the beginning of 2008.
The contract is for a two-year period from January 1, 2010, through December 31, 2011.
"Reliable and affordable air service is a critically important part of Cedar City 's economic development. I am very pleased for the community that SkyWest will continue to be the carrier serving the travel needs of residents and visitors alike," said Matheson.
The Essential Air Service program provides subsidies directly to air carriers for providing service between selected small communities and hub airports. About 170 communities in the U.S. participate in the EAS program.
