Congressman Steve Scalise released the following statement in response to the passage of H.R. 3962, the House health care bill.
"Today was a defeat for the American people, and for quality medical care in our country. Nancy Pelosi and her liberal lieutenants ignored the American people who want common-sense health care reforms that lower costs and address pre-existing conditions without the taxes and mandates that come with a government takeover.
"Speaker Pelosi's government takeover of health care puts Washington bureaucrats between patients and their doctors, increases taxes by more than $700 billion, and imposes $500 billion in devastating cuts to Medicare. In the ultimate sign of hypocrisy, Pelosi rejected our amendment that would have made all Members of Congress join the government plan that they're trying to impose on all Americans. That is the clearest sign of how bad their plan will be for medical care in America.
"Pelosi's plan will lead to millions more Americans losing their jobs, and more than 100 million Americans being forced into the government plan even if they like the healthcare plan they currently have. While tonight's vote is a big setback for quality medical care, we will continue fighting to prevent a government takeover of health care, and finally work to pass common-sense reforms that lower costs and prevent discrimination based on pre-existing conditions without the taxes and mandates in Pelosi's bill."
