Maintaining his commitment to equality in the workplace, today Rep. Eric Massa announced his co-sponsorship of H.R. 3721, The Protecting Older Workers Against Discrimination Act. This legislation amends the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 and clarifies the appropriate standard for proof of dismissal. According to the EEOC, there has been a 30% increase in job discrimination based on age in 2008 from the year prior. Older workers often have a harder time finding work once unemployed, with only 61% of those aged 55-64 finding new employment compared to 75% of those aged 25-54, based on statistics from 2005-2007 job loss data.
"Since I was sworn into office I have fought for legislation that ensures equality in the workplace," stated Rep. Eric Massa. "I was an original co-sponsor of the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 which improved workplace equality for women and I am now continuing this fight for our seniors in the workplace. I'm proud to help lead this effort in Congress and look forward to pursuing this further."
